Market haul. Lots of good stuff this early in the season!

Yes, I am still alive. I’ve just been…busy.

Between Friday, May 5, and this past Friday, May 12, I was home for exactly 12 hours, during which I neither cooked nor ate. Between those dates, I went to a conference, at which I contracted a stomach bug; I went shopping at an outlet mall, saw a bear (not at the outlet mall), and lost only $45 at a casino. Then I came home (after approximately 1,000 miles), slept, unpacked, repacked, and went to Little Rock for the announcement of an 800-job, $410-million project on which I’ve been working for a year and a half. Then I came back on Friday, after spending two days at the factory site with the architect.

Then I slept. A lot.

In other words, if it’s not ready-to-eat, I haven’t eaten it this weekend. I expect to remedy that today, perhaps with some carryout from somewhere, perhaps with braving the Mothers’ Day crowds with my girls. I wouldn’t mind cooking, but…it’s Mothers’ Day. And my girls gifted me with a backyard swing, where I can sit, enjoy my coffee, and survey my garden. I was totally surprised, and quite tickled.

I am at least semi-prepared to cook. I DID make it to the farmers’ market Saturday morning, and was pleasantly surprised at the variety of produce available this early in the season. Fruits of an early spring, I guess. I came home with two cabbages, carrots, radishes, yellow squash, zucchini, snow peas, new potatoes, strawberries, and chicken. Oh, and kohlrabi. I now have to figure out what to do with said kohlrabi, which is a strange little alien-looking vegetable. I’m told I can put it in slaw, so I may put it with some of the cabbage and try that.

New toys from Lodge. I’ll be cooking in and with them soon!

I am also semi-prepared to cook in that I have new skillets. The drive home from the conference involved a side trip to the Lodge Ironworks in South Pittsburg (no “h”), Tennessee, because I’d been jonesing for some carbon steel pans. I am now the proud owner of an 8-inch, a 10-inch, and a 12-inch carbon steel skillet, along with silicone handle covers for two of them (figured I could get by without one for the 8-inch, but I may yet order it); a stainless spatula, and some rings so I can make perfectly round fried eggs. Now I have to get some flaxseed oil and get busy seasoning those “preseasoned” pans, but that’s a chore for another day.

At this moment, I think I’m about to take myself out for Mother’s Day and get myself some pancakes, because I got up thinking about pancakes this morning, and, well, I want pancakes. If the pancake places are not all covered up. And go to the grocery store, which I need to do after I have pancakes. Child A has made an appearance and gone back to bed; Child C will be here later on, and we can figure out going to eat at that point.

I hope you ‘n y’mama ‘n ’em have a most fine Mothers’ Day. Celebrate with your Mama, if you still have her; if you don’t, celebrate with someone!

I am so ashamed. They are sitting on my dining room table, as yet unseasoned. 😦
